The 5-Step Automated POD Workflow Map: From Trend to Listing
A detailed map of the five stages of an automated POD pipeline, with the quality and copyright checkpoints to place at each step.

The average POD seller spends most of their time on repetitive work: finding themes, editing designs, building mockups and writing listings. The map below splits the workflow into five stages and shows what to hand to machines and where people should keep the final say.
Step 1 — Trend scanning
Input: the niches you care about, an events calendar, keyword data. Output: a list of themes ranked by demand and competition.
- Track keyword growth week by week rather than day by day to avoid noise.
- Plan events 6–8 weeks ahead: holidays, back-to-school, niche anniversaries.
- Checkpoint: immediately drop themes containing brands, characters, sports teams or celebrities.
Step 2 — AI design
Input: approved themes and a style rulebook. Output: a batch of raw designs.
- Write the style rulebook once: palette, typography, level of detail, composition.
- Generate many variants per theme and filter, instead of chasing one perfect design.
- Checkpoint: banned terms in the prompt and a visual similarity check before moving on.
Step 3 — Print preparation
Output: transparent PNG files at print resolution (usually 300 DPI for the print area).
- Upscale first, remove the background second for cleaner edges.
- Automatic checks: minimum size, unexpected transparent areas, jagged edges.
Step 4 — Mockups
- Prepare mockup sets per product type and colour once, and reuse them for every batch.
- Light designs on dark garments and vice versa — a rule worth automating.
- Export images in each marketplace’s required ratio.
Step 5 — Publishing and learning from data
- Titles, descriptions and tags written per marketplace rules — never one text copied everywhere.
- Publish on a schedule instead of all at once.
- After 2–4 weeks, feed views and orders back into Step 1 to prioritise winning niches.
What should people keep?
We recommend keeping manual approval at two points, at least at first: the theme list before design and the design batch before publishing. With the Companion App, approval takes a few minutes a day — swipe right on your phone. Once a niche is stable, you can switch on auto-approve.
